Coast2Coast Episode #8 - Standards

There are two, basically unspoken, standards the motojournalist press uses to evaluate motorcycles. There is the "standard" standard, and there is the "Harley" standard.

I remember reading a test report of Gwen's new bike, the BMW F650GS, where the journalist mentioned "buzzing felt through the foot pegs that would become quite annoying after long distances." I've ridden Gwen's bike quite extensively and I can tell you that the vibration is slight, really slight. Equivalent to or less than my sonic care tooth brush. Basically, it's a non issue.

Now, our 100th Anniversary Harley 883 Sportster Custom... now that thing buzzed. I mean, it vibrated so bad you could hardly ride it.

Maybe they should call them Hardleys.

On the BMW, I'm planning several 500+ mile days on my trip cross-country. When I had the Harley, it was a serious struggle to commute 26 miles. And the day that Gwen and I did "the Love Ride", two-up, we rode about 193 miles and it was one of the most physically uncomfortable experiences I have in my recent memory. On the ride back home I had scooted forward nearly onto the gas tank so that Gwen could sit on the drivers seat.

193 miles is about the same mileage as my shortest day on this trip, from Sheboygan WI to Escanaba MI. On a Harley, 193 is the hardest day of your life, on a BMW it's a rest day. Nearly a day off.

Here's Gwen and I at the "Love Ride."

What a beautiful, gorgeous, amazing looking, piece of total shit that bike was.

P.S. I almost forgot to mention that the Harley actually broke down on the way home from the dealership, leaving us stranded on the side of the road on our very first day of ownership.
