The route east materialized very easily for me. I knew that I wanted to head north, even as far north as rounding the great lakes on the northern (Canadian) side. The route returning home west has been up in the air. My first inclination was to ride back taking the southern route. But I eventually decided I don't really give a shit about the south and I'd much rather see the Midwest.
But no trip cross country would be complete without at least dipping your toe in southern culture. Now... I know the culture representing the south is vast and largely wonderful. But right now, the south is overrun by evangelical Christians, and especially young earth creationists, so that's the part of southern culture I thought I would focus on.
Young earth creationists believe that the earth is less than 6000 years old. They believe that dinosaurs shared the earth with man, and that man actually had dinosaurs at pets. Hmmm... imagine that.
Well, it seems that my country has gone completely mad, so I think I need to go in for a closer look.
Go grab yourself a map of the US. Look at Kentucky. Kentucky, a southern state, has a little nub that pushes quite far north at the top of the state. In fact, if you hadn't noticed before, it actually pushes right up to Cincinnati Ohio, and also Indiana. Right there where those three states meet is Petersburg, KY. It's about a mile from the border of Indiana, and about 10 miles from downtown Cincinnati. It's 1 mile into the south.
Petersburg KY is the home of the Creation Museum. Being a skeptic, a science lover, and also a science blogger, this will be a terrific opportunity for me to see the unbelievably ridiculous Creation Museum myself. It's truly a monument to human stupidity. No amount of criticism heaped upon this place would truly do it justice. It's just that stupid, and if you believe that crap... well I have bad news for you. You are too.
And the best part is... I only have to go 1 mile into the south to see it! This will, no doubt, be the highlight of my return trip home.
